The Old School Craftsman's Workshop

In the ever-evolving world of craftsmanship, constant innovation and adaptation are paramount for success. That's why Old School Craftsman is thrilled to share an exciting update on our new workshop.

My name is Brent W. Sears and I have spent decades doing what I love: woodworking and construction of unique and extravagant builds. I have become a master in my field, and it is with the greatest joy that I share my skills with you to make your home projects a reality. For some years now I have been imagining what a revitalized Old School Craftsman workshop might look like. Our business has been growing for some time now, and with an influx of clients, it became clear that the time to upgrade the workshop was now.

Over the past couple of months, the team at Old School Craftsman has been working diligently to transform our workshop into a state-of-the art space designed to expand our capabilities so we can create new and exciting projects for our clients.

The new workshop is fitted with high-tech machinery and new interiors to take our skills to the next level. Let's take a closer look at the vision behind the project, give a quick introduction for my son and partner, Brendon, talk about the workshop, and quickly reflect on the journey from the old shop to new.

The Vision Behind the Project

At Old School Craftsman, the future of woodworking is always at the forefront of our minds. With a focus on innovation and a dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship, my son and I have renovated our workshop with new tech and old school principles.

The vision behind this project was to create a space that seamlessly combines the charm of a traditional workshop with the functionality and efficiency of modern techniques. Careful planning and meticulous attention to detail were key in bringing this vision to life.

We are so pleased with how the space turned out, from its multifaceted ceilings to its tall uniform walls, we feel that our new and improved workshop is a space where we will thrive for years to come.

A Quick Introduction to Brendon

In the months I have spent writing this blog, it occurred to me that I have never formally introduced my son and partner, Brendon Sears.

Brendon is a skilled and passionate woodworker who has played an integral role in this transformative journey, and I am proud to call him my apprentice and son. With years of experience in woodworking and a deep understanding of the craft, Brendon's contributions to this and other projects have been invaluable. From his expertise in sourcing high-quality materials to his masterful execution of intricate designs, Brendon has brought a new level of excellence to the workshop.

Under Brendon's guidance, Old School Craftsman has embraced the use of state-of-the-art tools and techniques while staying true to the brand's commitment to traditional craftsmanship. The project has not only elevated the workshop's capabilities but has also created a space where woodworking friends can come together, collaborate, and share their love for the art of woodworking.

Stay tuned for more updates and insights as Old School Craftsman continues to push the boundaries of woodworking excellence under the expert guidance of Brendon.

The Reasoning Behind Our Workshop Upgrade

The Old School Craftsman team is primarily made up of myself, Brent Sears, and my son Brendon. Together we have accomplished many fantastic things including home renovations, antique building restorations, smaller home upgrades, and some unique upgrades like the backyard pizza oven of 2022.

One of our favorite projects was a Victorian house refurbishment in Wyoming, Ohio where we redid a double level porch on a home from the turn of the century that was in need of some attention.

During this project, a major goal was recreating the porch spindles to restore them to their original majesty and bring out the details that had been covered up by decades of lackluster paint jobs. Brendon oversaw this portion of the project and through his expert guidance, we were able to use the mechanical upgrades that we have recently installed in the new workshop to make this process more efficient and more effective.

Brendon played a huge role in overseeing the workshop upgrade and he is truly an expert on many of the high-tech machines we added to our shop. As my son and apprentice, Brendon will someday take charge of Old School Craftsman, and I view this new and improved space as the perfect launching pad for the next stage of the Old School Craftsman business.

That is the reason behind our workshop upgrade. To give Brendon (and myself, of course) the ability to take a step into the future to ensure that we can incorporate modern technology, and have adequate space for refining our projects, all the while maintaining the old school craftsmanship that makes us Old School Craftsman. We are excited to discover the exciting new opportunities this workspace will offer our business.

The Workshop: More Than Just a Space

The workshop at Old School Craftsman has undergone an incredible transformation in recent months, becoming more than just a traditional woodworking space. With Brendon and I at the helm, this new workshop serves as a multifunctional hub where creativity blossoms and craftsmanship thrives.

The redesigned workshop also boasts state-of-the-art tools and a seamless blend of modern conveniences. New mechanical upgrades will enable our team to work more efficiently without sacrificing the artistry and precision synonymous with Old School Craftsman.

In essence, this workshop is more than just a space. It is a testament to the unwavering commitment to preserving traditional craftsmanship while embracing a modern approach to design. And at its heart, it is a manifestation of the passion and expertise of Brendon, the maestro behind the workshop's remarkable evolution.

Reflecting on the Journey

Old School Craftsman's workshop has come a long way, transforming from a traditional woodworking space to a vibrant hub that embodies the essence of craftsmanship. This remarkable evolution serves as a testament to the vision and growth of our brand.

As we reflect on the incredible journey that has brought us to this point, we are reminded of the accounts of craftsmanship that have guided us. Old School Craftsman's workshop stands as a shining example of growth, creativity, and the unwavering dedication to the art of woodworking.

Craftsman Corner Q&A

Welcome to our newest blog section, Craftsman Corner! In this section, we plan to wrap up our blog posts with some questions, interesting details, and miscellaneous anecdotes about life as a craftsman.

Soundproof Insulation

First, let’s talk about the insulation of our workshop. Since the shop is in a quieter area with family homes around, keeping our noise levels down was a top priority. The last thing we want is to disturb our neighbors or spook wildlife.

Our solution was insulation foam over every square inch of our 12-foot walls and 17-foot ceiling (at the center peak). This industrial foam goes on as a spray and I have to say it is one of the most remarkably effective sound insulators I have seen in my career.

In my opinion, every new construction should be fitted with sound insulation spray, because the difference it makes is astounding. Seriously, you must press your ear up to the wall of the workshop to hear the whirring machines from the outside.

Workshop Doors

Doors make a big impression. That’s true whether you are constructing the door of a medieval fortress or a cozy cottage. The door is the first impression, and, in our case, we wanted something that said, “dependable and artful construction happens here!”

We are building doors for two entrances. The front doors are a pair of 9-foot-wide behemoths. They are thick and sturdy and give a sense of stoic strength when you approach them. They look like they could take a cannonball and stay standing (not something we plan on testing, unfortunately), and they get Brendon and me excited for the work we are about to do for the day.

The back door is smaller, but no less impressive. Thick like its sisters in the front, the backdoor covers an 8-foot opening and is a single slab of wood, rather than the double doors sported in the front.

At Old School Craftsman, it is our goal to put care and attention into even the smallest detail of every job we do. With the new and improved workshop, we will be able to create stunning projects for you more efficiently than ever before.
